E-Stim Safety Myths, a Deeper Dive
E-Stim Myths Revealed

Is E-Stim safe? Mostly yes, when it's done properly. But "is it safe" and "is it harmless" are two different questions, and the internet tends to answer neither one well.

Here's the awkward bit. Too many people go to the internet for advice, and you're reading this on the internet right now. So does our advice mean any more than the next post you'll scroll past? We'll let you decide. All we'll say is that we've been designing and manufacturing e-stim kit since 2004, commercially, as a business. We're not trying to sell you something here. We're trying to keep you safe, because that's the only way we get to sell you anything. You have to be alive to enjoy it.

We also have the boring grown-up stuff that a lot of internet experts don't, like commercial insurance and product liability. So what follows is based on actually making and using this kit for two decades, not on something we read four minutes ago on an internet forum that suddenly turned us into an expert.

One more thing before the myths. Safety is always relative. There's risk in what we do, the same as there's risk in everything. We're not here to pretend it away, we're here to help you reduce it. And risk isn't scary once you understand it.

Myth 1 "E-stim will electrocute you"

No. A proper e-stim box is not a live wire, and erotic e-stim is not mains electricity. But "not mains" doesn't mean "nothing to think about."

The real issue is where the current goes. Keep it away from your chest unless you genuinely know what you're doing. That means no nipple-to-nipple. It also means watching out for issues with the less obvious positions. We see two people kissing wired to E-Stim and think, how is that safe? Where do they imagine the current goes? We know. Do they? Do you?

If you're not sure, stick with below the waist. If you do know what you're doing and you want to play higher up, then be careful, take your time and use a box with isolated channels like the 2B

Myth 2 "Below the waist is completely safe"

Below the waist is always a good start, and it's always our first piece of guidance when it comes to starting play with E-Stim. It removes the biggest risk. It doesn't remove all of them.

Minor burns, hot spots and skin irritation can still crop up depending on how you play. Even when using conductive gel which generally helps most play sessions. So below the waist plus good contact plus sensible settings plus actually paying attention. That's the full rule, not just the first line of it.

Myth 3 "It's just a TENS machine, so it's harmless"

No. There's overlap in the broad idea of controlled electrical stimulation, but the use case isn't the same. E-Stim gets used on more sensitive areas, for longer, with different goals.

Worth knowing: some sellers have been known to rebadge a TENS unit and call it e-stim. If it looks like a TENS unit, then it probably is. One tell is the timer. A TENS unit switches itself off after about thirty minutes, because that's the end of a treatment. A proper e-stim box is built for play, not a treatment session.

Myth 4 "More power is better"

It really isn't. For some people, running the box at maximum is a badge of honour. It's a bit like driving with your foot flat to the floor. At some point you're going to crash, and it won't be pretty.

E-Stim play is all about sensation. It's all about feeling. Run everything at full power and you lose most of that, because you've turned a precise instrument into a blunt one. The best sensations live well below the top of the dial. If a setup feels weak, the fix is rarely "turn it up." Fix the contact, change the electrode, move things around.

Myth 5 "Burns only happen if the box is faulty"

A faulty box can cause problems, but most burns and sharp stinging sensations come from somewhere simpler. Poor contact. A dry electrode. A worn pad. Not enough gel. Current concentrating into one small point instead of spreading out.

That's why a setup can feel lovely at first and turn sharp later as the contact degrades. If it starts feeling hot, sharp or oddly localised, stop and fix the setup. Don't grit your teeth and push through.

Myth 6 "If it hurts, you should tough it out"

No. No and no. There's a difference between intense and wrong. E-Stim can feel strong, deep, buzzy and challenging without being sharp or panicky. It hurts only if you want it to, and even then you build up to it on purpose.

Beginners talk themselves into trouble here, and the internet is usually why. A lot of what gets posted online is posted for effect. Just because someone's running a box flat out, clipped to the most delicate part of their anatomy, and loving every second, that doesn't mean it'll work the same for you. It doesn't even mean it is working for them - after all a lot of the internet is driven by clicks and views. Sharp pain, burning, numbness or anything that feels physically wrong is a reason to stop, not a test to pass.

Myth 7 "It's fine to doze off if the settings are low"

No. This one sounds reasonable right up until someone wakes up with a burn. Even at low settings, contact shifts, gel dries out, pads lift, and a setup presses into the skin for too long. Things get left running. Hot spots build. Numbness creeps in.

The same goes for anything that takes the edge off your awareness. We know people use alcohol to relax, and we know people use poppers. They are part of the fun for plenty of people, so we're not going to lecture. Just be honest with yourself. If you're not fully aware of what's going on, it's very easy to end up in a spot where e-stim causes a problem you'd have caught stone cold sober. Don't play while you're drifting off, and don't play when you're too far gone to notice something going wrong.

Myth 8 "Any bit of metal will do"

This is where making our own kit actually counts. Not everything that conducts belongs near your skin, and not everything that works is easy to live with afterwards.

We stick to stainless steel and aluminium. There's a hygiene reason as much as a conductivity one. Solid metal is about as easy as it gets to keep clean. It's non-porous, it wipes down, it doesn't hold onto anything, and it does that for a lifetime. The moment you move into materials that flex and bend, cleaning gets harder. Our conductive rubber loops are a good example. They're soft, forgiving and lovely to use, but a flexible material has more give, more surface, and more places for things to sit, so it asks for more care and it won't last the way a bar of stainless steel will. There's also one hard rule with them: never pair silicone with a silicone lube, because silicone wrecks silicone. We sell the loops and we like them, we're just honest about the trade-off. Easy and forever, or soft and forgiving. Pick for the job.

On metals themselves: we don't plate our electrodes, because plating eventually flakes. Some metals are simply not a good idea when it comes to E-Stim, we'd be wary of anything where you don't know what it actually is. People genuinely play with what looks like a metal doorknob and similar bits. It might be fine. It might be plated, or an alloy you'd rather not have against you under current. If you can't say what it's made of, that's reason enough to think twice. We test the materials in the products we sell, which is rather the point.

Myth 9 "Cheap gear and DIY are fine if you're careful"

Taking care helps, but it doesn't turn poor kit into trustworthy kit. A proper E-Stim box has current limiting, sensible isolation and output that stays where it should. It is designed and tested to be safe. A cheap no-name box off a marketplace with a vague description might have none of that, and you've no way of knowing. Damaged leads and mystery accessories chip away at the small margin of safety you assumed was there.

DIY. We're all tinkerers at heart. That's how E-Stim Systems started, so we're the last people to tell you not to make things. But know what you're doing. Grabbing something from the local DIY shop, wrapping a bit of wire round it and shoving it into a body cavity expecting it to work is not clever experimenting. We know. We've been there. We just didn't quite do it that way.

If you are going to build an electrode, three things matter. Materials, which we've already been through. Construction, meaning how it's actually held together. And edges. On construction, the last thing you want is the business end of a home-made sound parting company with its wire while it's inside your urethra. Add sharp edges to that and you've got a world of hurt in more than one direction. And think about what's holding it together: glues and adhesives often contain solvents and other compounds you really don't want meeting a mucous membrane. Some solders contain lead. Body-safe materials exist for a reason. Plenty of things aren't. And always run your hands over anything you've made, and be honest about whether it's safe to put anywhere near you.

There's a second trap that catches people, and it's nothing to do with electricity. Using things that were never designed for the job. That doorknob might look like a lovely shape for anal play. Then you insert it, and you discover the hard way that doorknobs were never built to come back out, usually at the exact moment you're trying to retrieve it. Next stop, casualty. Not how you want a session to end. Think we're joking? We're not. We know people who've tried.

Building your own power box is a bigger ask again. There are endless designs online, from coupled-together stereostim units to copies of commercial products, and these days AI-generated circuits too. Two thirds of them have never been built. The other third have, and we've never heard from the author since, possibly because they cooked their bits. Here's the real difference, though. If something goes wrong with one of ours, you can scream at us. If you built it yourself and it goes wrong, the only person to scream at is you, because the person who posted the design will have vanished off the internet without a trace.

Honestly, most of the time, why not let the companies do the hard work? It's already done.

Myth 10 "Any health condition means you can never play"

Before we say a word here, we need to be honest. We are not medical professionals. We are not your doctor, and your doctor knows you far better than we ever will. So treat the following as guidance, not a diagnosis.

With that said, a few of these are simple. Some conditions genuinely mean don't, or at least not without proper medical advice first. A pacemaker or any implanted electrical device. A heart condition. Epilepsy, because the repetitive pulsing can be a trigger. Pregnancy, on a better be safe basis. Take those seriously and talk to your doctor.

But not every health niggle is a lifetime ban, and forum bravado is no more medical advice than forum panic is. If you've got something relevant going on, get proper guidance for your situation rather than guessing in either direction.

What actually makes it safer

None of this is glamorous, and that's rather the point. The habits that earn their keep:

Keep the setup simple, because simple is easy to watch and easy to troubleshoot. Get good contact, which quietly solves more problems than beginners expect. Build up slowly, because a small increase can feel like a big jump. Stay alert, because most mistakes get worse when nobody's watching. 

When to stop

Stop the session and have a proper look if you get any of these:

  • A sharp or burning sensation.
  • A hot spot that's getting worse.
  • Sudden numbness.
  • Dizziness or feeling faint.
  • Palpitations.
  • Shortness of breath.
  • Skin that looks irritated in a way that worries you.

Turning the power up and hoping it sorts itself out is not troubleshooting.

The bottom line

E-stim safety isn't about panic, and it isn't about pretending nothing can go wrong. It's swapping lazy myths for better habits. Current path matters. Contact matters. Kit quality matters. Your judgement matters most of all. If you feel its not working, then stop, check things and speak to someone. We are always here if you want advice.
